After watching a video presentation by Merlin Mann to the staff at Twitter, I put together a worksheet to help me (and others) prepare for meetings.
This document was created to help the eight United Church congregations along the "Lougheed Corridor" of Westminster Presbytery in BC Conference.
It lays out an exploration of possibilities, starting from a place of discernment of values and ministry.
Based on information from a workshop led by Dave Anderson, and information from the Emerging Spirit program, St. Andrew's Haney UC put together a workshop for those people who felt called to greet on Sunday mornings.
While we can no longer find the outline of the workshop, this reminder sheet is still used.
One difficulty that churches sometimes have is making sure that the advertising 'face' they show to the wider community is easily recognizable, consistent, and easily reproduced. To help make sure that this part of our 'brand' was consistent, we drew up a style-guide for advertising and signage.
While this covenant was first created to help a congregation embattled by personality conflicts to be able to work together, it became a document that other congregations used as a starting place to intentionally name responses to behaviour that had previously been assumed.
This work is based on a number of other works, including Holy Manners.
The Trustees of our congregation thought that it was important to help our congregation consider "Planned Giving". While many of the resources from the wider church were helpful, the Trustees felt that something locally produced would make more sense for us.
(This sheet is based on a similar communications sheet used at Eagle Ridge United Church, Coquitlam, BC.)
At St. Andrew's Haney United Church, attendance is taken at worship, using this sheet. Clipboards are at the end of each pew with a stack of Communication Sheets and a pen.
If a regular participant is away for more than three Sunday's their Elder is asked to make contact, to make sure that everything is all right. As well, letters of welcome and thanks are sent to guests and newcomers based on the information on the form.
This booklet presents seven "lenses" through which congregations and presbyteries can see with new eyes the gifts in their midst. It suggests an approach to discerning congregational health and vitality. It is to sharpen the congregations sense and clarity of mission. Anecdotes of vital congregational life draw on a broad experience, 'signs of life' in congregations across the United Church of Canada.
A workshop designed to help groups articulate their understanding of the purpose of the church, to explore some of the reasons why we would want to invite people into this faith community, and to explore some of the things that keep us from inviting.
Based on the work of Dr. Reginal Bibby, this article explores the process one UCCan congregation used to reconnect with members with whom the congregation had lost contact.
This resource is in - parts:
- an article (first printed in Exchange Magazine, Fall 2003) describing the process used at St. Marys United Church;
- a process for helping the congregation to name people it believes have the gifts for the ministry of reconnection;
- a guide on setting the in-context purpose of the ministry of reconnection;
- a process for naming the connections between the ministers of reconnection and the people they will be contacting.
